Rev. Tolbert Thomas Jallah, Jr.

Chairperson, Board of Directors

Tolbert is the Chairperson of the AFSA Board of Directors, elected in October 2025. He is a PhD student at St. Paul’s University in Limuru, Kenya, and holds a Master’s degree in Peace and Governance from the Institute of Peace, Leadership, and Governance at Africa University in Mutare, Zimbabwe. An ordained theologian and parish priest in the Lutheran Church in Liberia, Rev. Jallah has served as a lecturer at the Kofi Annan Institute for Conflict Transformation at the University of Liberia and at the United Methodist University in Liberia.

He currently serves as Executive Director of the Faith & Justice Network, bringing extensive experience in development work, peacebuilding, advocacy, negotiations, and campaigning. Prior to this, he served for nearly nine years as Secretary-General of the Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in West Africa (FECCIWA). A proud Liberian, Rev. Jallah is deeply committed to addressing the pressing challenges of the Mano River Basin countries, including poverty, inequality, corruption, and hunger, through faith-driven leadership and transformative social action.

Elisabeth Atangana

Treasurer, Board of Directors

Elisabeth is a renowned farmer leader and advocate for women’s land rights, cooperative development, and food sovereignty in Africa. She is the President of the National Dialogue of Peasant Organisations in Cameroon (CNOP-CAM), the Subregional Platform of Peasant Organisations of Central Africa (PROPAC), and the Pan-African Farmers’ Organisation (PAFO). She also serves as FAO’s Special Ambassador for Cooperatives.

A lifelong farmer herself, Elisabeth owns and manages a mixed farm producing bananas, vegetables, and pigs near Yaoundé, Cameroon. She has been instrumental in establishing and strengthening farmers’ organizations across Africa, advancing the participation and leadership of small-scale producers—especially women—in agricultural policy and practice. Through CNOP-CAM, she champions the protection of women’s land rights and advocates for fair and inclusive financial mechanisms to support women-led enterprises as a foundation for community food sovereignty and economic resilience.

Anne Wanjiku Maina

Anne is a seasoned development practitioner and environmental advocate dedicated to defending Africa’s biodiversity and promoting ecological justice. She currently serves as the National Coordinator of the Biodiversity and Biosafety Association of Kenya (BIBA Kenya), a member organisation of AFSA.

For over fifteen years, Anne has worked closely with communities across Africa to challenge false solutions such as genetic engineering, the Green Revolution model, and carbon markets as responses to Africa’s climate crisis. She actively represents these issues at national, regional, and international forums, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Anne has played a key role in nurturing and strengthening several regional networks, including the Eastern and Southern Africa Small-Scale Farmers’ Forum (ESAFF), the Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Association, and the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA).

Hakim Baliraine

Member, Board of Directors

Hakim is an accomplished farmer leader and advocate with a strong background in sustainable agriculture, land use management, soil and water conservation, and agroecology. He currently serves as the National Board Chairperson of ESAFF Uganda and is a board member of the Eastern and Southern Africa Small-Scale Farmers Forum (ESAFF).

Hakim holds multiple leadership positions at national, regional, and global levels. Nationally, he chairs ESAFF Uganda and serves on the National Steering Committee of Agroecology and Organic Agriculture. Regionally, he is the Vice Co-Chair of the African Union’s Eastern Africa Regional Steering Committee on Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA-I). Globally, he represents the People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS) in Africa on its Global Executive Committee and also represents ESAFF Uganda at the World Rural Forum.

Amadou Cheikh Kanouté

Amadou is the Executive Director of CICODEV Africa, a Pan-African Institute for Consumer Citizenship and Development that works to inform, educate, protect, and represent consumers. CICODEV envisions a world where citizens and decision-makers are aware of how their consumption choices and production models affect trade, the environment, and sustainable development.

With decades of leadership in advocacy and organisational development, Amadou previously served as Regional Director of Consumers International’s Office for Africa and later as Director of its sub-regional office for West and Central Africa, where he expanded its membership from 5 organisations in 3 countries to over 120 organisations across 46 African nations. He also played a pivotal role in establishing Greenpeace Africa, first as Project Leader and later as Executive Director, leading the creation of the organisation’s first permanent base on the continent. Amadou holds an MBA in Project Management and Evaluation and is fluent in both English and French.

Joyce Brown

Member, Board of Directors

Joyce is the Director of Programs and Lead on Hunger Politics at the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) in Nigeria. She also coordinates the Youth Forum of the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) and co-coordinates the Alliance for Action on Pesticides in Nigeria. A passionate advocate for food sovereignty and public health, Joyce has been at the forefront of campaigns resisting the spread of GMOs and corporate control over Nigeria’s food systems. Her work centers on challenging false global and local narratives that perpetuate systemic injustices and promoting people-centered, contextual, and sustainable alternatives.

Joyce holds a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and a Master’s degree in Public Health. She brings strong skills in program coordination, communication, research, writing, and editing, and is deeply committed to advancing just and ecological food systems across Africa.

Gabriel Manyangaze

Gabriel is the Food and Climate Justice Manager at the Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI), where he leads initiatives promoting agroecology, organic farming, and faith-inspired environmental stewardship. A passionate advocate for food sovereignty, climate justice, and social equity, Gabriel’s work is deeply rooted in his spiritual and cultural convictions about humanity’s moral responsibility to care for the earth.

Born and raised in rural Zimbabwe, Gabriel holds an Honours degree in Politics and Administration from the University of Zimbabwe. His career began in education, teaching geography and mathematics for nine years before dedicating sixteen years to the Zimbabwe Council of Churches, where he served as Human Rights and Advocacy Officer and later as Programs Director. Gabriel’s lifelong mission intertwines faith, sustainability, and justice—championing agroecology not only as a path to food security but as a spiritual expression of respect for creation, human dignity, and intergenerational responsibility.

Dr.Million Belay

General Coordinator

Million is the General Coordinator of the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa, a continental network of networks advocating for agroecology, food sovereignty and the rights of African communities. He is also a member of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food) and a founder of MELCA-Ethiopia, an indigenous organisation working on agroecology, intergenerational learning, forest conservation and the livelihoods of local communities. Over the past two decades, he has worked at the intersection of culture, ecology and policy, contributing significantly to continental movements for seed and food sovereignty. His work spans forestry conservation, indigenous livelihoods, biocultural diversity and resilience thinking. He is deeply interested in knowledge dialogues and participatory mapping as tools for social learning, identity building and the mobilisation of cultural memory. Million has also played a key role within the Africa Biodiversity Network and has been recognised with the National Green Hero Award of Ethiopia and Addis Ababa, as well as the Distinguished Alumni Award from Rhodes University. Million holds a PhD in Education, an MSc in Tourism and Conservation, and a BSc in Biology. Alongside his academic and movement work, he is the host of the new podcast The Battle for African Agriculture, where he invites guests to reflect on power, culture, resistance and the future of Africa’s food systems.

Bridget Mugambe

Programmes & Networking Coordinator

Bridget is a social scientist with over 15 years work experience with NGOs in management, strategic planning, budgeting, fundraising, and gender mainstreaming. Her competencies are mainly in policy analysis, campaigns and advocacy, capacity building, generation and dissemination of information on food sovereignty. As AFSA’s Program Coordinator, Bridget oversees policy advocacy on seed sovereignty, community land rights, climate justice, and consumer action, supporting AFSA working groups to implement agreed strategies and work plans, and spearheading fundraising initiatives within the organisation. She has a Master of Arts Degree in Social Sciences (Public Administration), Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Sciences (Sociology) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation.

Juliet Masika

Finance & Operations Coordinator

Juliet is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Accounting Option) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Business School. She has over 15 years of experience in financial management across both the non-profit and private sectors. In her role as Finance and Operations Coordinator at the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA), Juliet Oversees, supervises, and plans all financial operations of the organisation. She provides strategic leadership in financial management aligned with AFSA’s strategies, policies, and procedures, as well as relevant statutory laws and international financial reporting standards. Juliet supports the AFSA Secretariat and over 40 partner organisations across 54 African countries. Her expertise includes extensive experience in NGO financial systems, sub-granting to partners, and training and capacity building in financial management for AFSA’s partners across the continent.

Famara Diédhiou

Programme Coordinator – West Africa

Famara holds an MBA from CESAG and a master’s in Land Use Planning. With 20 years in rural development, his early career focused on economic empowerment through grain banks and local finance systems. He later gained extensive expertise in the organic agriculture sector, covering practices, markets, and governance. Since 2011, agroecology has been his central focus. Famara has supported the establishment and growth of numerous West African and global movements advocating for land and seed rights. He remains actively engaged in African networks, championing the advancement of food sovereignty and promoting African-led solutions to contemporary agricultural and environmental challenges.

Andrew Adem

Programme Coordinator – Food Systems

As Food Systems Coordinator at the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA), Andrew Adem leads efforts to transform African food systems toward sustainability, resilience, and sovereignty. He coordinates AFSA’s flagship My Food Is African campaign and supports citizen-driven advocacy through the Citizens’ Working Group on Agroecology, ensuring that grassroots voices influence policy and decision-making at both regional and continental levels. Before joining AFSA, Andrew worked with Uganda’s largest small-scale farmer-led movement, gaining over 13 years of experience in advocacy and development across more than 10 African countries. He has championed farmers’ rights, especially those of women, and advanced community-led solutions to land and seed injustice, climate change, and gender inequality. Deeply passionate about preserving Africa’s traditional food systems, Andrew continues to build strong partnerships among governments, civil society, and communities to promote food sovereignty across the continent.

Simon Peter Bukenya

Simon is an impassioned advocate for sustainable development, climate and social justice, the right to healthy food, and community development issues in Africa. Simon earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Uganda Christian University and is currently serving as a Program Officer at AFSA. Simon is actively involved in the organisation’s Climate Working Group activities, displaying his commitment to promoting sustainable practices across Africa. Additionally, Simon serves as the focal person for facilitating the AFSA Youth Group, responsible for organising the organisation’s youth-oriented programs.

Charles Tumuhe

Programme Coordinator – Healthy
Soil, healthy Food

Charles is an agricultural extension, training, and rural development expert with eight years of experience working for government and non-governmental organisations in Uganda. In his current role as an AFSA Healthy Soil Healthy Food (HSHF) project officer, Charles is responsible for overseeing capacity-building initiatives for HSHF organisations. Charles has published several journal articles on topics such as agroforestry, stakeholder analysis, community action planning, and Ugandan indigenous seeds and foods and has taught in both academic and rural farm settings. He is passionate about agroecology and climate adaptation strategies and holds a Master’s degree in Environmental and Natural Resource Management, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Project Monitoring and Evaluation, and a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture.

Ruth Nabaggala

Agroecological Entrepreneurship

Ruth is the African Agroecological Entrepreneurship (AAE) Project Officer of the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA). Ruth has over 15 years of experience in managing agricultural projects, and coordinating Agroecological entrepreneurial assignments at community, regional and national levels. She headed the Agroecology Market & Business Development Department at Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM Uganda) for over 10 years. As a coordinator, manager and supervisor, Ruth has been in charge of directly coordinating projects, supervising staff, supporting publication development, and organizing conferences and high-level events. Ruth has led teams of over 20 NGOs at a time, and has supported the transition of over 100,000 farmers from subsistence agriculture to farmer entrepreneurship. Through Ruth’s leadership, PELUM Uganda developed a farmer-led Value Chain Development Model (PESA Agro Enterprise Marketing model), which has supported a 20+% increase in income for over 50,000 farmers.

Ndeye Awa Gueye

CROPS4HD Project Officer

Ndèye Awa holds a Master’s Degree in Local Development Engineering and a Professional Degree in Applied Foreign Languages from the Gaston Berger University of Saint-Louis. She has four years of experience in community development through her volunteer services with the NGO CorpsAfrica/Senegal and management of the Baba Garage Women’s Entrepreneurship Centre. Ndèye Awa also gained two years of experience in Marketing and Communication. During her community service, she built a school canteen in a primary school covering six villages and 130 children. She also managed a centre for training and coaching more than 600 women in various income-generating activities. As a Project Officer with AFSA, she is implementing the policy advocacy strategy for the recognition of Farmer Managed Seed Systems (FMSS) and the promotion of neglected crops in Niger, Chad and Tanzania with a vision of going regional (Africa) within four years. Ndèye Awa is a very dynamic woman, committed to sustainable development, especially in agriculture, resilience/food sovereignty, women’s entrepreneurship and education of children in rural areas.

Abbot Ntwali

Monitoring, Evaluation &
Learning Coordinator

Abbot started his professional journey in the healthcare industry, where he worked alongside local communities of individuals living with HIV. His role included managing partnerships with sub-grantee organisations and overseeing their activities. Abbot has a strong inclination towards Monitoring and Evaluation, coupled with a deep passion to support organisations in accomplishing their objectives and strengthening their capabilities. For over a decade, Abbot has been involved in measuring the impact of interventions related to agroecological agriculture and reproductive health. Throughout his career, he has worked with a variety of organisations, ranging from community-based NGOs to national and international NGOs. Abbot is an active member of the Uganda Evaluation Association, which is the professional body of evaluators in Uganda.

Nicholas Omoding

Program Officer – Research

Nicholas is an agroecologist passionate about advancing Participatory Action Research (PAR) to transform Africa’s food systems. He is dedicated to co-creating farmer-led, context-specific innovations that strengthen resilience and sustainability. At AFSA, Nicholas oversees agroecology PAR projects, ensuring methodological rigour and alignment with the organisation’s mission and theory of change. His work includes training partners in PAR methodologies, conducting policy analyses, and translating research findings into actionable programs and policy recommendations. Nicholas holds a Master of Science degree in Agroecology from Uganda Martyrs University and a Master of Science degree in Crop Production Engineering from the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences. With agroecology experience in Uganda, Hungary, and the USA, he champions collaboration that bridges science, policy, and practice.

Kirubel Teshome

Communications Coordinator

Kirubel is an avid Pan-African who is committed to environmental, social justice, and human rights causes in Africa. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Addis Ababa University and has worked in both national and international NGOs for over 15 years in environmental advocacy and communication.

Phoebe Nakakande

Finance and Operations Officer

Phoebe is a Certified Public Accountant of Uganda-CPA(U). She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Development Economics from Makerere University and is also a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU). She has over 10 years’ working experience handling Finance and Administrative roles in both NGO and private sectors.

Doreen is the Executive Assistant to the General Coordinator. Doreen has worked as a digital communications specialist supporting various organizations in enhancing their visibility, public relations, and digital presence. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Population Studies from Makerere University.
