During the historic First Thousand African Youth Summit on Food Systems and Agroecology, held in Addis Ababa from October 14-16, 2024, AFSA officially launched a groundbreaking new book titled African Youth in Agroecology: Stories of Experience. This inspiring publication highlights the initiatives and success stories of young people from 17 African countries who are leading the way in agroecology and sustainable food systems.
The summit, which brought together over 200 youth from across Africa in person and more than 1,000 participants virtually, provided the perfect platform for the launch. With its focus on youth-led solutions to food sovereignty and agroecology, the summit showcased the energy, passion, and commitment of young Africans who are determined to transform the continent’s food systems.
In the book’s forward, Joyce Brown, AFSA Board Member and Youth Platform Coordinator, emphasizes the potential of agroecology to shape the future of African farming, “Agroecology is the future of farming in Africa, and testimonies such as those shared in this book confirm that. Beyond farming, agroecology presents several opportunities in areas like research, policy advocacy, agribusiness, and education.”
The stories in this book demonstrate the incredible impact that agroecology is having on African youth, women, and local communities. From increasing food security and fostering economic empowerment to promoting biodiversity conservation and climate resilience, agroecology is providing sustainable solutions that can transform Africa’s food systems.
Dr. Million Belay, AFSA General Coordinator, underscores the significance of agroecology in addressing critical challenges like climate change and food security: “Globally, agroecology is gaining momentum as a viable solution to these challenges. Case studies from across Africa demonstrate the potential of agroecology to transform the African food system to sustainability, ensuring stable and optimal productivity of healthy food while increasing income for farmers and providing employment for women and youth.”
The book is now available for free download, offering readers the opportunity to explore and share these uplifting stories of youth-driven change and possibilities for agroecology. From agroecological entrepreneurship to innovative farming practices, these stories of success are a powerful testament to the resilience and creativity of Africa’s young leaders.
