A Pan-African campaign for healthy diets and resilient food systems

In 2022, the “My Food Is African” campaign emerged as a formidable African movement, transcending geographical boundaries to ignite a sense of pride and identity. With a focused agenda on promoting the consumption of healthy, culturally appropriate food, the movement swiftly gained momentum across Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America.

Beyond its symbolic significance, the campaign served as a catalyst for tangible change, advocating for the intrinsic value of traditional and indigenous foods amidst the detrimental impacts of profit-oriented industrial food systems.

Its influence reverberated in policy discussions and reforms across a multitude of African nations including Senegal, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Tunisia, Kenya, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Malawi, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and beyond. This widespread engagement marked a collective commitment to nurturing sustainable food systems and reclaiming cultural heritage through food practices.

Moreover, the “My Food Is African” campaign significantly deepened AFSA’s work at country and regional economic levels, fostering discussions and collaborations aimed at reshaping food policies and practices.

By promoting indigenous food consumption and advocating for policy reforms, the campaign contributed to economic empowerment at local and regional scales. Through strategic alliances and partnerships, AFSA leveraged the campaign’s momentum to address systemic challenges within food systems, driving impactful changes that resonate across communities and economies.

As the movement continues to gather support and momentum, it underscores AFSA’s commitment to advancing sustainable, culturally rich food systems that benefit African nations’ economies and well-being.
